Mission Statement:

Animas Valley's staff recognizes that children develop at different rates and we strive to adapt instruction to meet their individual needs, abilities and interests. Because success in all academic areas is virtually synonymous with success in reading, the heart of our instructional program is literacy.  It is necessary for the entire staff, parents, and students themselves to commit to doing whatever it takes to see that every child becomes a skilled, enthusiastic reader by the end of the elementary grades.  "Children First," Animas Valley School's motto, reflects our belief that every decision we make must be based on what is best for our students.

Educational Program:

Literacy instruction includes small, flexible groups to increase individualization. Math and science lessons are structured to encourage children to learn by doing, not just by passively listening. Our children benefit from learning with a group of educators with complementary abilities, skills, and special talents.

Special Services:

Through the collaborative efforts of a special education teachers, several literacy teachers (Title I), an Independent Study teacher (gifted and talented), and a full-time counselor, we address the special needs of all our students.

Animas Valley Staff

Animas Valley's teaching staff includes 12 classroom teachers and special teachers for music, physical education, art, resource, counselor, media specialist, Independent Study and Title I reading. Our secretary, health aide, custodians, cooks, instructional aides, and our parent resource coordinator provide additional support for our students and their families.

Special Programs or Activities:

A variety of special programs and activities are provided at Animas Valley. Some of these are: Student Council, Kidtime after-school program, student recognition programs, preschool story time, service learning projects, Creativity Festivity, new student orientation, academic competitions, and after school tutoring.  Project Read, Study Buddies and the Study Connection also enhance opportunities for children to learn in a supportive environment.

Behavior Expectations:

We believe that school-wide discipline should be based on the notion of setting high expectations.  Our children deserve nothing less.  Animas Valley's staff has adopted a zero tolerance policy for disruptive or violent behavior and consequences are strictly enforced.  Our discipline policies are in harmony with creating a positive, nurturing environment by establishing positive reinforcement for desired behaviors and by recognizing student's strengths and achievements.
